Biography

Sylvia Godina was born in Zagreb, Croatia. She moved to Canada in 1971 to start a new life with her husband Mike who was also originally from Zagreb, Croatia; he passed away in 2000. Sylvia has two sons.

A life-long admirer of visual and performing arts, Sylvia’s initial interest and exposure to painting came while growing up in Zagreb, Croatia where she participated in studio workshops. In Canada in the late 90s, after raising two sons, she began pursuing painting formally. Currently she paints with watercolour and acrylic.

Her work has received many awards. Strathcona County has one of her paintings; a permanent art acquisition.

Sylvia supports the concept of ‘healing with art’. She has experienced illness and loss and believes art is a positive influence or motivator for the human spirit in very difficult circumstances. She donates and displays her work in hospitals; most often at the Cross Cancer Institute.

Inspired by strong vivid colours and the beauty of nature, her approach to painting comes from her ability to respond to emotional or aesthetic influences; her work is experimental, thoughtful, structured, whimsical, and loaded with colour. She paints nature, industrial scenes, still life, architecture, and abstract.

Sylvia is an active member of the Art Society of Strathcona County, the Visual Arts Alberta Association, the Arts and Culture Council of Strathcona County and the Alberta Community Arts Club Association.
